The Plains That Never Seem to End

Serengeti National Park is one of Tanzania's best-known protected areas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its wide plains, kopjes, rivers and woodlands support an exceptional range of wildlife.

The park is divided into distinct regions, from the central Seronera valley to the western corridor and the northern Kogatende area. Each offers a different atmosphere and different seasonal highlights.

Game drives here are about more than the big cats. Open skies, changing light and the sheer scale of the landscape are part of the experience.

What Makes Serengeti Special

Different areas of the park shine at different times of the year.

The Great Migration

Large herds of wildebeest and zebra follow the rains through the ecosystem. Their location changes through the year, so timing and region matter when planning.

Seronera and Central Serengeti

A reliable area for resident wildlife, including lions and leopards, with rivers, rocky outcrops and varied habitats.

Kopjes and Open Plains

Granite outcrops rise from the grasslands and often serve as lookout points for big cats, offering memorable photographic scenes.

When to Visit

The Best Time to Visit Serengeti

Your ideal travel period depends on the experiences and landscapes you want to enjoy.

June – October

The Dry Season

Generally good for wildlife viewing as animals gather near water and vegetation is less dense. The northern Serengeti is often a focus for river crossings during part of this period.

November – May

The Green Season

Landscapes turn green and there are fewer visitors in many areas. The southern plains, including the Ndutu area, are known for calving season in the early part of the year.

Plan Your Visit

Getting to Serengeti

Serengeti can be reached by road from Arusha, usually combined with Ngorongoro, or by scheduled and charter flights to airstrips inside the park.

Distances are significant, so allow enough time to enjoy the park instead of rushing between areas.

  • Road access via Karatu and Ngorongoro.
  • Flights are available to airstrips across the park.
  • Choose a region based on the season you travel.
  • Check current park fees and accommodation availability before travel.
