Discover Tanzanian Culture

Beyond the Wildlife

Many of the most memorable moments on a journey happen away from the game drive: a cup of coffee roasted over a fire, a walk through a market, a conversation with a guide about the place he grew up.

Around Arusha and the northern circuit you can visit Maasai, Chagga, Hadzabe and Datoga communities, and along the coast the Swahili culture of Zanzibar and Stone Town.

We plan cultural visits to be respectful and unhurried, with local guides who explain context and customs. Experiences vary by season and community, and arrangements are made in advance.

Highlights

What Makes Culture Special

A few of the cultural experiences we can add to your journey.

Lake Eyasi: Hadzabe and Datoga

A visit near Lake Eyasi to learn about traditional hunting and gathering, and the craft of the Datoga blacksmiths, with a local guide.

Materuni and Chagga Culture

A village walk on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, a waterfall hike and traditional Chagga coffee preparation.

Mto wa Mbu Village

Cycling and walking through farms, banana groves and markets near Lake Manyara, with local food and crafts.

Living Traditions

Food, Craft and Music

Food is one of the easiest ways into a culture. Ugali, grilled meat, coconut curries, spiced rice and fresh fruit all tell stories of regional trade and farming.

Beadwork, woodcarving, tinga tinga paintings and music are found in markets and workshops across the country. Buying directly from makers is one way to support local livelihoods.

Rainy Months

Plan With Care

Some village roads become difficult in heavy rain. We adapt the plan and the order of activities when needed.
